Fire and Safety Plan Pictograms Explained

Newly generated plans, and plans that require major modifications should employ the new symbols to ISO 17631:2002, however, we will for a limited time still offer the old symbols compliant with Resolution A654(16) which should be used for minor modifications to existing Fire Plans.

Which ever symbol design is employed all vessels should carry Fire Plans which can be quickly and easily understood by both ships staff and shore-side emergency services. Hand drawn fire plans can be extremely expensive to produce and present problems of updating when the system is upgraded. These “stick-on” pictograms offer an ideal, cost effective solution for the production of, and changes to, Fire and Life-saving Plans.

Regulations

ISO 17631:2002 introduced a new set of Fire Control Symbols. IMO circular MSC/1050 dated November 2003 recommended that Flag States note the Standard and that they should be used on fire plans pertaining to new ships and where existing plans require extensive modification. Items WP 2603 Z and WP 2604 Z comply with this standard.

Resolution A654(16) amending Chapter II-2, Regulation 20 requires the use of these fire control symbols on all fire plans. Items WP 2600 Z and WP 2601 Z comply with this standard.

A copy of the plan should be permanently exhibited for the guidance of ship's officers. In all ships a second set of fire control plans, or a booklet containing such plans, shall be permanently stored in a prominently marked weatherproof container outside the deckhouse for the assistance of shore-side fire-fighting personnel.

All plans should be kept up to date, all changes being recorded as quickly as practicable.

Alternatives to Updating Fire Plans Using Pictograms
The pictograms shown in this section are ideal for making minor changes to plan where small modifications have been made to fire fighting system or equipment. Where major changes have been implemented or if the plans have been modified extensively in the past there may be merit in considering a complete re-draw of the plans.
